What to Do When Your Ceramic Scissors Get Dull?

page views:2

You‘ve been loving your ceramic scissors for their razor-sharp precision, rust-proof performance, and lightweight feel. But one day, they just stop cutting cleanly. What now? Can ceramic scissors be sharpened? Let‘s get into it.

First, try cleaning them. Dullness is often caused by sticky residue (tape, food, adhesive) building up on the blade edge. Wash the blades with warm water and mild soap, using a soft cloth or brush. You‘d be surprised how often this restores cutting performance.

If cleaning doesn‘t work, sharpening is tricky but possible. Ceramic is incredibly hard — ranking 8.5 on the Mohs scale (diamond is 10) — which means it stays sharp for a long time but is also difficult to sharpen. You have a few options:

  • Use a diamond or ceramic sharpening stone: Place the beveled side flat on the stone, then gently push and glide diagonally from one end to the other. Only sharpen the beveled (angled) side — never the flat inner edge, or you‘ll create a gap between the blades.

  • Use a ceramic rod: Follow the same method. If your scissors have a center screw, you can separate the blades to sharpen all the way to the inner end.

  • Use a specialized ceramic scissors sharpener: Some brands offer compact sharpeners with ceramic grinding stones that revive the cutting edge.

The honest truth: Sharpening ceramic blades requires the right tools and technique. Unlike steel, you can‘t just use any old sharpener — you risk chipping or cracking the blade.

Your best bet? Check if replacement blades are available. Many ceramic scissors are designed with replaceable blades. If yours are beyond saving, swapping in a fresh blade is often the easiest and safest solution.

Pro tip: Prevent dullness in the first place — only cut soft materials like herbs, paper, cloth, or baby food. Never cut hard items like metal, bones, or frozen food, as ceramic can chip or break easily.
